Here's a simple test to provide an Early Warning System on when your water heater is about to expire. In a bathroom with dual sinks, fill one sink up with hot water and the other sink with cold. If the hot water side is cloudy or rusty looking and the cold water side is clear, then your water heater is approaching the end of its life expectancy. Draining and flushing the water heater out may clear up the cloudy water but be aware that it will need to be replaced soon.
And here's a simple way to extend the life of your water heater. When you need hot water for cleaning, drain it from the bottom of your water heater by attaching a short hose to drain valve. By periodically draining water from the heater - rather than from a faucet - you'll drain sediment off the bottom of the water heater without having to complete drain the heater. Just be sure to throw away the first quart or so and use the water for cleaning floors or outdoor furniture - not the baby's toys :0)
